How to give your baby medicine...
Most parents keep a bottle of infant suspension in their cupboards to soothe baby when he has a fever or teething pains or is generally a bit under the weather. But it’s not always easy to get the baby to take the medicine especially if he’s poorly, upset or crying – or simply decides he doesn’t like the look of it and turns his head away at the last minute!
Most of us associate medicine-taking with a spoon but in fact very young babies can find it impossible to take a full spoonful because most of it stays in the bowl of the spoon. So forget the spoon – and forget totally the teaspoon that comes out of the kitchen drawer as you have no idea how much it holds .
You can use an oral syringe to dispense the medicine. This seems as if it would give you precision control...However it’s not always easy to get the medicine in at the right angle … you may end up getting the syringe in the corner of your baby’s mouth – only to see the medicine dribbling out down his chin.
Our ground-breaking 4little1 Medicine Dummy is simply the best option and is specially designed to make sure your baby gets the right dose in seconds without fuss or mess. It has three features which make it an invaluable addition to your must-have baby buys.
- A unique chamber into which you measure precisely the right amount of medicine. Dependent on the size of the baby you may need to this a couple of times.
- A silicone teat with narrow channel and hole in the end so within moments the baby can suck out the medicine.
- A clever integral plunger so if your little one can’t get the hang of sucking you can simply depress the plunger and ensure that all the medicine goes into your baby – and not all over you.
Whether the child sucks the teat of the dummy or you take control using the plunger, the medicine goes right into the centre of the baby’s mouth and is then naturally swallowed. BULLSEYE!
Doctors and health professionals worldwide have endorsed the Eezimed medicine dummy as being a really practical way to give medicine to a baby and since it is not a soother in the traditional sense of the word, your baby won’t become dependent on it and it won’t interfere with breast feeding.
Dos and Don’ts with Baby Medicine
- Never guess the dosage
- Read the instructions carefully and measure it out exactly. A teaspoon is one thing, a tablespoon is another, and 5mls means 5mls, not 10! Giving your baby twice as much doesn’t mean he will get better twice as quickly. His safety and wellbeing is paramount
- Shake the bottle if it says so. This ensures that all the components are well mixed and evenly distributed.
- Never ‘borrow’ anyone else’s medicine for your baby. If in doubt at any time, call your doctor or health visitor.
